A failed joint damages what is below it

Every joint carries traffic and moves constantly with temperature. When one fails, water and chlorides pour directly onto the structure below — so a failed joint is not a leak, it is a machine for creating the concrete deterioration that costs far more to repair.

There is a second reason joints get deferred. They are narrow, they run across drive lanes, and a failing one looks like a maintenance item rather than a structural one. By the time the leak below is obvious enough to prompt action, the concrete under the joint has usually been taking chloride-laden water for years.

Why joints fail

  • Constant movement combined with constant traffic loading.
  • Ultraviolet and heat degrading the sealing element.
  • Debris packed into the joint, preventing movement.
  • Poor original installation at the ends and terminations.
  • Deferred replacement, long past service life.

Why the ends fail first

A joint has to be terminated where it meets a wall, a curb or another joint, and those terminations are where the geometry is most awkward and the installation most likely to be compromised. Water finds the end of the joint long before it finds the middle.

That is also why a joint repair that patches the middle and leaves the terminations alone fails quickly. The detail at each end is the part that needs the most attention and is the part most often rushed.

Replace joints before they cause concrete damage rather than after. Joint replacement is comparatively cheap; the concrete restoration a failed joint causes underneath it is not, and the sequence is entirely within the owner's control.
